Since 1975 the BSIA (was BSDA) Board of Directors has awarded over $153,000 in bursaries to BSIA member employees and dependents of employees. Over the years these bursaries have increased in value and in 2009 ten bursaries were awarded for a value of $19,000.00. The BSIA Bursaries are investments in individuals who demonstrate financial ned, exhibit enthusiam, ambition and all-around merit.
Purpose
The BSIA bursaries are available to all applicants who wish to further their post secondary education and who express a need for monetary assistance, demonstrate a strong personal development plan, career aspirations and goals, citizenship, community activities and involvement and academic achievement. These are ALL criteria considered in the bursary seleciton process.
The BSIA bursary is open to ALL individuals with a variety of academic interests and backgrounds. The bursary provides opportunities for the accredited study of their choice. Bursary funds are intended to assist with a student's education related costs. To be considered for a bursary, applicants must have submitted a complete bursary application by the published deadline.
General Guidelines
The bursaries are available to the employees or dependents of an employee, manager or owner (retail or supplier) who are BSIA members in good standing. The employee, applicant or parent, must have a minimum of one year's employment with the member company. Applicants must be registered to attend a recognized Post Secondary Institution; university, community or technical college or certified technical program.
Applications are accepted and administered by the Building Supply Industry Association of BC Board of Directors.

Bursary Criteria
Each applicant is assessed independently and bursaries awarded based on established criteria including:
1. Evidence of financial need based on expenses, income, family support, and employment opportunities.
2. Demonstration of the following, throught a self written statement:
a) a strong personal development plan
b) career aspirations and goals
c) citizenship
d) community activities and involvement
e) academic achievement
3. Confirmation of leadership qualities through letters of recommendation from business or community leaders, cleagy and/or teachers.
4. Latest high school or post secondary transcript.
Applications must be received at the Association office by June 30, 2010. All Applicants will be notified of the winners by mail in early September.
Selection Procedure
The Bursary Selection Committee is responsible to search for excellence in qualities of mind and in person, and most importantly to determine a financial need.
The recommendation of the Bursary Selection Committee and decision of the BSIA Board of Directors are final and not open to appeals. The Association reserves the right to withhold these bursaries in the event that no qualified applications are made in this academic year.
Bursary Conditions
The bursary may be used for tuition, fees, books, room and board or other expenses associated with a post secondary education. Each bursary winner is completely responsible for making arrangements with, and meeting the requirements for, admission to the post-secondary institution of his/her choice, and for ensuring that the institution is a recognized post secondary institution. Bursary winners must be enrolled in a minimum of 10 credits.
A bursary winner must provide BSIA with confirmation of admission, for the coming year, to the institution concerned, as soon as possible following notification of his/her selection for the bursary. A cheque will be awarded, thouugh the sponsoring BSIA member, to the successful bursary winner after all requirements are complete. The BSIA also requires a photo and a 500 word biography of all bursary winners for publication in the BSIA NewsMagazine and on the BSIA website.
Please note: The Bursary Award Program may be altered, amended or discontinued at the discretion of the BSIA Board of Directors.
2009 Bursary Award Recipients
Rosie Child
| Rosie graduated from Kelsey Secondary School, and is attending her 1st year at Universary of Victoria. She grew up in Cobble Hill, BC and attended a self-paced high school, which enabled her to complete her graduation requirements in only three years, leaving her more time to work and pursue other goals and interests. She held a part time job at Rona Cobble Hill for her entire high school career and worked full time in her summer holidays and for the year of her early graduation. In her free time Rosie curls competitively, living and training with her team and also loves to go hiking. She volunteered at her local hospital for over 4 years and has participated in a one day 56Km ultra-marathon for 6 years, creating a scholarship/bursary in memory of her mom for students going on to study child and youth care, as her mother did. Rosie's sponsoring company is Duncan Pacific Builders Supplies Ltd., Cobble Hill, BC. |
Danelle Girard
| Danelle was born in Vancouver and graduated with honors from Heritage Woods Seocondary School in Port Moody. She is currently enrolled in her sophmore year at Northwood University in West Palm Beach, Florida on a golf and academic scholarship. She is double majoring in Business Management and Hotel, Restaurant and Resort Management and plans to minor in Marketing. She has a passion for people and is very involved within her university as well as in the community of West Palm Beach. Northwood offers an international experience recruiting students from all over the world. After graduating, Danelle hopes to start her career path in the Hospitality Industry, looking to focus her knowledge on either convention centers, resorts/hotels or golf courses. |

Robynn Hofsink
| Robynn graduated from Smithers Ebenezer Canadian Reformed School in June 2009 with honors. She received the Science Recognition Award. She volunteered her time on scheduled Sundays teaching Sunday school and helping out in the nursery. She was part of her shcool's yearbook club for 6 years. Robynn was the captain of the senior girls' volleyall team during her senior year. She is currently enrolled in a Science program at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George as she aspires to be a veterinarian. Robynn lives in residence and travels home to Smithers each Friday afternoon to be with her family. Robynn loves volleyball, badminton and also spends time in other sports.

Megan Jaster
| Megan was born in Peterborough ON and was raised in Cranbrook BC. She was home schooled from Kindergarten through grade 10 and went to public shcool for grades 11 & 12. She has always had a love and passion for music, but while in high school discovered a love for acting and dance. Megan has been pursuing a career as an actor/dancer/musician at Playhouse North School of Theatre in Calgary AB, and will be graduating from there in April. After graduating she intends on taking more training and eventually become a professional actor. Her biggest dream and goal is to touch other peoples' lives. Megan wants to inspire others to create change and to be a part of that change and to give hope and speak to others heart through music, drama, dance and art.

Holly LaRiviere
| Holly is currently atending McGill University, getting her Bachelor of Arts and Science in Environmental Studeis. She has volunteered extensively at school events and with Surrey Parks, removing invasive plants, planting trees, and removing garbage from local parks. Holly loves exploring BC through various outdoor education trips where she has white water kayaked, skied, canoed and portaged, hiked, biked and gone on a fishing trip to conserve the sturgeon population of the Fraser River. Holly has played soccer since she was 6 years old, spending 4 years at the above "rep" level and 2 at "rep" level. Holly also enjoyed playing field hockey and soccer with her High School, where she has won the "Passion for English" award and 3rd place in her school's debate competition.

Luke Siemens
| Growing up Luke always loved spacecrafts, which is why attending Carlton University for a degree in Aerospace Engineering, with a concentration in Space Systems Design was a perfect fit. While at Carleton, Luke became extremely involved, becoming the VP Internal, representing students on the Engineering Faculty Board, and playing intramurals. In his spare time Luke enjoys playing the piano, and a variety of sports. He is currently in his third year of the degree, and upon graduation hopes to be able to design the next generation of aircraft and spacecraft. |

Kristine Wilcox
| Kristine graduated from Rick Hansen Secondary in Abbotsford in 2008. She knew that she wanted to have a career in which she could care for others. She is currently in her first year of the Bachelor of Science in the nursing program at the University of the Fraser Valley, Chilliwack campus. She is very excited about her career path to registered nursing. Over the past 6 years Kristine has been involved with rugby in her community, playing coaching and as an athletic trainer. |

Katelin is currently enrolled in her 4th year at Simon Fraser University, where she is working towards her Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in Psychology and minor in Counselling and Human Development. Katelin intends to pursue a career in counselling, specifically working with children and teens. She is currently an active member of the yourth ministry team at her church, a crisis line telephone counsellor and a tutor with Friends of Simon Tutoring Program through SFU. In her leisure time, Katelin enjoys singing, reading and playing the piano. |
